Urban Decay Black Eyeliner Comparison Swatches

Someone recently asked me how Urban Decay’s Blackout eyeshadow compared to their black eyeliner, Perversion. Even though I often use eyeshadow for lining, I never really thought about comparison swatching them. But that’s what the above photo is – along with a few other Urban Decay liners.

What you’re looking at in the photo might surprise you. From left to right: Blackout dry, Blackout wet, Perversion pencil, Zero pencil, Perversion Liquid Eyeliner. I think Blackout wet is astounding, but here’s the thing: to get that swatch, I had to get the brush to just the right dampness and then stamp the color into place – it takes a little effort. The Perversion pencil swatch (middle) was just one stroke to get that color. So Perversion gives you that depth more easily, but yeah – if you already have Blackout and don’t mind that little bit of effort (and the more you do it, the more second-nature it becomes), you don’t really need to own Perversion.

Hint: powder eyeshadows also work well in the waterline, either alone or as setting powder over a creamy liner. Blackout is terrific if you want a deep, dark lasting black on the waterline, whether you combine it with an eyeliner or not.

Of course, out of this batch Perversion Liquid takes the cake for being stark black. The others are a little softer, with Zero being a slightly lighter shade of black and slightly more sheer compared to Perversion. I actually prefer Zero for some looks – the “blackest black” is not always what I want.

I hope these swatches help you with your shopping decisions! Let me know if you’d like to see more posts like this!
