With the arrival of Ocho Loco 2, I saw that Urban Decay had changed the Grindhouse sharpener that I just reviewed! The changes are mostly cosmetic, but there are a couple of significant differences.
Like the original, this Grindhouse has two barrels, a small and a jumbo, for different sizes of pencils.
The first big change is that the plastic parts are now being made in China whereas before the whole thing was being made in Germany. The blades are still made in Germany, and are as sharp and precise as they were in the older version. But they got rid of the clear lid! I really missed that, because I could look and see how fast the shavings were piling up, and go ahead and dump them out before they started giving the pencil resistance. Now I just have to go by feel or guess when it’s time to dump them out. This doesn’t change the overall quality of the sharpener, but it’s not what I would have preferred.
The whole thing is just an opaque chartreuse block now. I do have to say, it seems a little more sturdy than the old version with the clear lid (I dropped one of those and bits of it fell apart), so maybe that’s a tradeoff.
The top and bottom both still come off so you can really get into it and clean. And you still get a little provided stick to help with that:
Overall, it’s still as good as it ever was and all that. For me personally, I miss the clear lid. When it comes time to buy another, I honestly can’t say if I’ll re-purchase this or get one of the Essence sharpeners that are almost exactly like the old one (with the blades being slightly less sharp) and only cost $1. But if you don’t miss the clear lid, I think you’ll be very happy with this one.
